Wrap 'n Roll Charleston Roly Poly

4/10/2003

These days, wrap sandwiches are all the rage. You can't turn your head without encountering one on a menu, but Roly Poly has the corner on the local wrap market. It's exclusively about wraps and wraps alone. Offering more than 50 inventive combinations of hot and cold wraps, this 90-store franchise offers a big selection, fast service and low prices.

The business concept revolves around fresh flour tortillas, quality meat, cheeses, fresh vegetables and spreads served in a fun environment. The cheerful primary colors, bright lights and sparkling clean counter make it fun. Service at this location is kind of college-cool ("like dude, whatever"), but it's fast enough for two people to get in and out in 20 minutes for less than $8. The heady selection requires a strong menu study, but the Steak Fajita ($3.65, half) and Tuna Luau ($3.25, half) were well worth the time. Fresh and filling, they easily met the restaurant's apparent mission statement.

Sandwiches are categorized by filling type. Lower calorie choices are clearly marked. They can be ordered half or whole. You can "roll your own" from along list of snappy ingredients. As fun and original as it is, Roly Poly smacks slightly of the formulated production you don't find in privately owned businesses, but it's not aggravating. Convenience makes it worth it. Downtown delivery, call ahead pick-up, and pre-made sandwiches are also available.
